The UKMTO have been informed that the Yemeni Coastguard are conducting increased patrols in the Bab El Mandeb. The
patrol vessels are hailing merchant vessels via VHF and the UKMTO are working with the Yemeni Coastguard to establish
if this routine activity is related to the incident reported earlier today. Vessels encountering this type of activity are
requested to inform the UKMTO by email or telephone.
(2) Incident Type : SUSPICIOUS APPROACH | Vessel Type: TANKER
0600 UTC | 09 September | Posn: 12-22.07N 043-48.00E | Gulf of Aden
A Tanker has been approached whilst underway in the southern area of the Bab el Mandeb. 1 high-speed craft, with 10 persons on board, approached the Tanker and requested her to stop via VHF radio. The Captain increased speed, carried out lockdown procedures and the onboard Armed Security Team took position on the Bridge. The craft approached from the port side and came to within 0.4nm before aborting her approach, weapons were also seen onboard. Prior to approaching the Tanker, the craft had approached a bulk carrier. They tried communicating via VHF radio requesting specific information about the vessel and informing them that they were the Yemen Coastguard.
(3) Incident Type : PIRATE ATTACK | Vessel Type: CARGO VESSEL
0550 UTC | 08 September | Posn: 05-53.00N 003-17.00E | Nigeria
Pirates were
able to board a Cargo vessel approximately 33nm South-southwest of Lagos. They kidnap 2 crew members, both of Russian nationality. The
remaining crew members were able to successfully retreat to the citadel.
(4) Incident Type : ROBBERY | Vessel Type: CARGO VESSEL
1835 UTC | 03 September | Posn: 14-37.87N 120-50.59E | Philippines
A robbery occurred on an anchored Cargo vessel in Manila OPL Anchorage. Robbers managed to board the vessel, steal ship's stores and then escape unnoticed. Crew members carrying out routine rounds noticed that items were missing and reported the incident to the port authorities.
